Kathmandu, 165 bodies recovered after flood, 826 people still untraceable
165 bodies have been recovered by the Nepalese authorities after the devastating floods caused by heavy rains in the Rasuwa district and surrounding areas. This was reported by the National Emergency Operation Center of the Ministry of the Interior, quoted by Nepal News. The victims were recovered from several downstream districts: 65 in Chitwan, 27 in Dhading, 26 in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta Purba), 20 in Gorkha, 12 in Nuwakot, nine in Tanahun, five in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta Paschim) and two in Rasuwa.
Meanwhile, search operations continue for 826 people who are still untraceable. They include 85 members of the security forces: 44 from the Nepalese army, 28 from the police and 13 from the Armed Police Force. Furthermore, 162 residents of Rasuwa and Nuwakot are still untraceable.
The number of tourists whose traces have been lost is particularly high: there are 579, of which 466 foreigners and 113 Nepalese, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior reported by Nepal News. So far, rescuers have rescued 104 people, mainly in the areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Search teams resumed operations in the early hours of this morning.
China: ‘558 people untraceable after Tibet-Nepal flood, 260 foreigners’
Chinese authorities have instead reported that 260 of the 558 people still missing after a landslide on the border between Nepal and Tibet are foreign citizens, as reported by CCTV. Preliminary statistics show that as of this morning, “558 people were still missing, including 260 foreign citizens,” CCTV reported, citing local officials speaking at a briefing in Tibet. Nepal reported that 468 tourists and travellers, including 393 foreigners, were still unaccounted for. “About 468 tourists and travelers are unaccounted for, including 75 Nepalese,” Suraj Ghimire, spokesman for the Department of Tourism, told AFP. The two budgets are reported separately by the Nepalese and Chinese authorities and it is not currently possible to establish whether they are distinct or whether some people are counted in both.
Nepal: numbers and nationalities of the missing
Dozens of different nationalities are missing in the floods which have so far caused 160 confirmed deaths in the region on the border between Tibet and Nepal.
– India: according to the Nepalese tourism office, 142 people are missing
– Nepal: 93 missing
– Ukraine: 53 missing, according to the Kiev foreign ministry: among them a group of 46 people with whom the Nepalese authorities have lost all contact.
– Australia: 34 missing, as reported by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
– Malaysia: 16 missing, including 11 in the Rasuwa district
– Great Britain: 12 missing, traveling with the Alpine Eco Trek agency
– South Korea: 6 missing, they worked in the hydroelectric sector
– Japan: 5 missing, according to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi
– South Africa: 4 missing, traveling with the Alpine Eco Trek agency
– United States: 3 missing, traveling with Fishtail Tours & Travels
– Portugal: two missing, a man and a woman
– Holland: one missing, he was traveling with the Australians
Several tour operators have reported missing persons whose nationality has not been confirmed: among them there are 77 people traveling with the Trekkers Society, 26 with Kailash Journey and 8 Richa Tours & Travels.
The US allocates $500,000 in aid to Nepal
US releases $500,000 in emergency aid to Nepal. “We will provide $500,000 in aid through the global agreement with Catholic Relief Services, supporting the provision of emergency shelter, relief supplies, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services to flood-affected communities,” the State Department said in a statement.
