Recently the Region established the Merit Income. It consists of a monthly economic contribution to students enrolled in Calabrian universities of between 500 and 1,000 euros, determined in relation to the merit requirements possessed. The intervention aims to: a) enhance and reward excellence in university studies; b) encourage access, permanence and regular completion of university courses by deserving students; c) promote a culture of merit and quality of university education; d) support the permanence of young talents in the regional training and production system; e) strengthen the connection between higher education, innovation, the regional economic system and employment opportunities; f) improve the quality of regional human capital through integrated interventions of economic support, training and orientation.
Since there has been no similar experience in Calabria in the past, it is difficult to define what the possible impact of this measure is. However, it is clear that the RdM will be able to achieve the objectives pursued to some extent if it manages to increase the incentive for Calabrian children to study and increase the permanence of young graduates in Calabria.
