«The construction sites of the 428 new anti-seismic schools are reopening in Calabria and Italy, 31 of which are Calabrian». This was announced by Franco Corbelli, leader of the Civil Rights Movement, who foresees the restart of almost all interventions between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn.
According to Corbelli, the works had lost initial funding from the European Investment Bank because they were not completed by October 2021, due to the pandemic and other delays. The decree signed on 16 June 2025 by ministers Giuseppe Valditara and Giancarlo Giorgetti, with the subsequent green light from the Court of Auditors, allowed the refinancing of the interventions for almost 463 million euros.
Work will resume in Sartano in October
In Sartano, in the Cosentino area, the construction site of the new primary school will reopen in October, Corbelli announces. The old building, which housed over one hundred children, was demolished in February 2020. It was precisely from this event, in December 2021, that the movement’s initiative began, carried out together with the Calabria Region and then extended to the other schools involved.
«Seeing that construction sites are starting to reopen is a source of satisfaction, trust and hope for the future for us», concludes Corbelli, recalling the importance of the safety of school buildings.
