“In recent months the city press has dedicated ample space to the topic of youth emigration, wage poverty and, more generally, the economic crisis that is strangling the city. However, for several years now, public discourse has been tainted by the idea of territorial development as an alternative to the flight of thousands of young people made more of rhetorical expedients than real investments, which remain the indispensable premise for any increase in employment”.
In recent months, Fiom has demonstrated how shipbuilding is a production sector that could guarantee not only massive increases in employment, but also a modern and sustainable transformation of mobility and ensure the right to territorial continuity. This process is hindered not only by the absence of a debate on merit in the city, but also by the choice of large local private shipowners to invest abroad, demonstrating little attachment to the territory and even less social responsibility.
It becomes necessary to relaunch the mobilization and force the institutions and political representatives of this city to take a position on a great opportunity for social redemption for hundreds of workers. On 10 September, meetings will be held at the Strait shipyards and at the Palumbo shipyard, in which the methods of the fighting initiatives will be defined.
Fiom asks the Municipality and the national and regional delegation first of all to intervene with the regional and national Government to direct part of the investments underway in the shipbuilding industry towards an area that has adequate knowledge and infrastructure to guarantee a perspective to many young workers from Messina fleeing precariousness and low wages.
