During the summer, the Financiers of the Provincial Command of Catanzaro implemented an intensification of controls aimed at combating the phenomena of tax evasion, illegal rentals and the use of irregular labor in the areas of the province with a high tourist vocation.
In particular, the soldiers of the Soverato Company, in the months of July and August, during specific checks found numerous violations against accommodation facilities, B&Bholiday homes, guest houses and beach establishments.
Specifically, the service activities carried out primarily in the Soverato area were concentrated on counteracting phenomena of irregular rental of apartments and/or “rooms to rent”, completely unknown to the tax authorities, in the absence of a regular rental contract.
A singular episode concerned the case of a person, holder of a regular rental contract, who had been subletting for some time and in black the entire apartment to other tenants without the knowledge of the owners who have moved to another Italian city for years. The soldiers, thanks to the help of the databases in use by the Corps, managed to reconstruct the income position of the subject, a result unknown to the tax authorities, and therefore a “total” evader, which allowed the emergence of over 100 thousand undeclared rental payments received in 3 years and an evaded tax of approximately 30 thousand euros.
At the same time, the tax controls affected accommodation facilities, including B&B and holiday homes, in the Ionian area of Catanzaro, aimed at verifying the correct compliance with the legislation regarding local taxes and combating the evasion of the tourist tax, allowing the identification of 13 irregular structures and ascertaining violations of municipal regulations.
In particular, fines of around 12 thousand euros were imposed for omitted and/or delayed communications for the purposes of local taxes and an amount of around 10 thousand euros of tourist tax was reconstructed, which after the checks carried out, was paid by the owners of the accommodation facilities into the municipal coffers.
Particular attention was also paid to combating the use of irregular or illegal labour, primarily in beach establishments, tourist and restaurant activities. The checks carried out by the financiers made it possible to contest, against 8 owners of commercial activities, violations of labor legislation and to detect the employment of 23 workers without a regular employment contract and to raise administrative sanctions, in total, for an amount of over 265 thousand euros. For 6 commercial establishments inspected, the suspension of activity was also issued for having employed more than 10% of the workforce in black.
The activities carried out concretely demonstrate the commitment of the Guardia di Finanza as a safeguard against all forms of economic-financial illegality.
Countering tax evasion and illegal work means, on the one hand, removing a serious obstacle to economic development because it distorts competition and penalizes fairness by taking away space for intervention in the weakest social groups, on the other, protecting the dignity of workers, defending companies that respect the rules and countering those mechanisms that alter the market, favoring the illicit enrichment of those who operate illegally to the detriment of the entire community.
