Exemption from car tax in 2027 for petrol or diesel cars, even in combination with another source of propulsion, with a power not exceeding 80 kW. This is what is foreseen in the draft law decree expected today on the table of the Council of Ministers, which specifies the requirements of the relief and the criteria to be applied to those who own multiple cars.

For cars, the benefit is available to natural persons who in 2027 are liable for car tax for one or more vehicles with these characteristics. The draft also provides exemption for motorcycles and mopeds up to 80 kW.

More cars, exemption for the one with the least power

If there are multiple eligible cars, the exemption is recognized for only one and applies to the one with the lowest power, expressed in kW. In the case of equal power, the benefit concerns the car for which, without the benefit, the lower amount of car tax would have been due.

The new indications therefore specify the power threshold, the reference year and the criterion for identifying the exempt car. Palazzo Chigi had anticipated the constraint according to which “each citizen will have the right to only one benefit”.

The provision to the Council of Ministers

«Today the Government cancels one of the most hated taxes by Italians», is the comment of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. According to initial indications reported by Palazzo Chigi sources, the measure would involve a total of around 14.5 million vehicles.

The chapter on the coverage intended for the Regions, which are entitled to the revenue from the car tax, remains to be clarified. The provision is still in draft form and awaits examination by the Council of Ministers.
