A real hell. He was found in front of the men of the Fire Brigade and the Police who intervened in the fire that sowed panic in Via Esperia and in a large part of the Santa Caterina neighborhood with the precautionary evacuation of the Falcomatà-Archi Comprehensive Institute. Two entire buildings were destroyed and the intervention of the police was decisive in rescuing six people (all unharmed) from the flames.
Six officers in hospital
The worst was reported by six police officers from the General Prevention and Public Rescue Office who intervened and ended up in hospital. None of them reported serious consequences based on the initial investigations carried out.
The flames on the roof and the LPG cylinder
The fire broke out on the morning of Friday 18 September on the roof of a building located opposite the school. The causes of the incident are under investigation. It could certainly have been much worse, since – according to what emerged – there was a 10kg LPG cylinder on the roof potentially at risk of explosion.
The evacuation of the school
Precisely the presence of the gas, together with the potential risk linked to the methane pipelines, made it necessary to evacuate both the affected building and the school as a precaution. The operations, coordinated by the school director Serafina Corrado and supported by the RSPP (Head of the Prevention and Protection Service) of the institute, Professor Giovanni Quattrone, took place in full compliance with the safety procedures. The readiness of the ATA teachers and staff, the timeliness in applying the provisions envisaged and the responsible collaboration of the students were decisive, which allowed them to leave the building in an orderly and safe manner.
The management of the emergency by the entire school community received compliments from the competent authorities present on site. «Thanks to all the teachers and staff for the promptness, professionalism and great sense of responsibility demonstrated», underlined the head teacher.
The episode concretely demonstrated how fundamental prevention, preparation and collaboration are: a real emergency situation faced by Falcomatà-Archi with promptness, responsibility and great community spirit.
