Messina Social City’s new service contract risks becoming a political soap opera, assuming it hasn’t already become one. Last night the city council met again, but to a substantial standstill: everything was postponed until tomorrow, at lunchtime. Both because in the meantime the opposition, which had withdrawn around fifty amendments, presented another thirty, and because now a response is also awaited from the general secretary Rossana Carrubba on a series of questions posed in writing by Marcello Scurria, in addition to those formulated, at the opening of the session, by the group leaders of the Brothers of Italy, Libero Gioveni, and the Pd, Alessandro Russo.
In short, there is an ongoing political conflict, which however still seems to be in its infancy, and it all revolves around the company which, in some ways, has become the symbol of the administrative action of Cateno De Luca first and then Federico Basile: the Messina Social City. Born as part of the “Save Messina” initiative, between 2018 and 2019, it internalized social services, closed the era of cooperatives and created, in fact, the most important public company in the municipal galaxy, with over 1,300 employees, of which approximately half are permanent. Scurria and other opposition councilors, during a press conference in recent days, defined it as “a Pandora’s box”.
