Add the Gazzetta del Sud as a source
The inauguration of Piazza Quasimodo will be held today, Tuesday 29 September, at 7 pm, at the end of the redevelopment works of the area between Via Tommaso Cannizzaro, La Farina, Natoli and Via del Vespro. The space returns to being open and accessible to the city, with a new structure designed to encourage meetings, sociality and daily use by the community. The redevelopment is part of the path started by the municipal administration for the enhancement of public spaces and urban greenery, with the aim of returning to the city places that are more accessible, functional and integrated into the urban fabric.
The mayor Federico Basile, the councilor for street furniture and public spaces Liana Cannata, the president of Messinaservizi Bene Comune Vincenzo Ciraolo, the general director Salvo Puccio and the members of the Board of Directors Giovanna Crifò and Giovanni Scopelliti will be present at the inauguration ceremony.
The project was designed and implemented by Messinaservizi Bene Comune, which directly involved its technical structure and also acted as the contracting authority. For Messinaservizi Bene Comune, the works were followed by the engineer. Benedetto Alberti, sole manager of the project and the surveyor Roberto Di Stefano, director of the works. The project was drawn up by agronomist Roberta Andaloro, with the support of the engineer. Melita Pennisi, the surveyor Girolamo Giglio and, for the archaeological aspects, the archaeologist Enrico Giannitrapani.
One of the characterizing elements of the intervention is the transformation of a previously closed and fenced area into an open and usable space. Particular attention was paid to the existing arboreal heritage: the 31 pine trees present in the area were preserved and integrated into the new design of the green spaces. The presence of trees helps to create shaded and cooler areas, transforming the square into a real island of coolness within the urban fabric, with a particularly significant role during periods characterized by high temperatures. The redevelopment also took into account the archaeological evidence present in the area. The project envisaged interventions for their protection and valorisation, accompanied by a dedicated information system. The authorization process involved the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Messina.
To give a further element of identity to the new square is the reference to Salvatore Quasimodo. The words “The false and true green” were inserted along the route, creating a link between the urban space, the arboreal heritage and poetry. Greenery, memory and culture thus become an integral part of a place redesigned to be experienced on a daily basis, no longer as a closed area, but as a public space open to the city, to meeting and sharing.
