Additional flexibility to support families and businesses in the face of inflation fueled by high energy prices. This is the request of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who spoke via video link at the second edition of “Oltre le Radici”, the annual event of the newspaper Il Gazzettino.
«We have already raised in Ecofin the need to take into account the higher inflation recorded in this period in the calculation of the European parameters to be respected and the allowed deficit. Other member states are going in the same direction,” the prime minister said.
The letter to von der Leyen and the comparison in Europe
«And I intend to take action again towards the EU Commission. I am writing to President von der Leyen to ask that the issue be dealt with at the Ecofin meeting next week and then at the next EU Council in two weeks”, added Meloni.
«We believe that in the face of inflationary growth due to high energy costs at a global level it is necessary to grant Member States additional flexibility to support families and businesses», he concluded.
