“Defeats can be recognised, analysed, but they are not transformed into a condemnation to inaction.” The provincial secretary of the Democratic Party Armando Hyerace thus opened, at Villa Dante, the provincial Festival of Unity, which until Sunday brings debates, books and music to Messina under the title “Between two seas, our future”.
Hyerace started from the result of the last administrative elections, defined as “strongly negative”, for which the party assumed “a collective responsibility without looking for scapegoats”. “There is one thing we have no intention of doing: giving up,” he said. The party, organized a few months after the vote, is for the secretary proof of “a living party”, which looks to 2027, the year of the regional elections and political elections: “We want to be there not to witness a presence, but to be decisive in sending this right home, to Sicily and Rome”.
The profound crisis of the Sicilian region
Regarding the Region, Hyerace spoke of “a very profound political and moral crisis”: without prejudice to the presumption of innocence, “political responsibility is something else”, and calls into question “President Schifani and his majority”. As an example he cited the motorways managed by the CAS, where the ministry inspector asks to lower the limit to sixty kilometers per hour: “Sixty per hour on a motorway, continuing to pay the toll.” Then the problems remaining on the table at a national level, including waiting lists, high costs of living, energy costs and poor work: “It is on these things that the ability to govern is measured.”
Opening the party with Hyerace was the president of the Pd Messina Valentina Martino and the secretary of the Young Democrats Emanuele Borgia. In the evening the regional secretary Anthony Barbagallo, interviewed by Sebastiano Caspanello of the Gazzetta del Sud, spoke on the relationship with Cateno De Luca after the national agreement with the centre-right: «The Democratic Party cannot be an ally of those who are allies of the Brothers of Italy». On Palazzo d’Orléans he was clear: «For us, Schifani leaves the better». For the candidate for the presidency of the Region, he explained, five, six, seven weeks are needed, and “a name that knows the region, knows the problems” is needed. If the rest of the coalition doesn’t like it, the Democratic Party is ready for the primaries. Barbagallo has also returned to the motorways: «If there are skills that we are no longer able to exercise in our land, we must give them to the State. The CAS must quickly hand over everything to Anas.” The first day ended with the Nympha concert.
Hyerace thanked the volunteers, the militants, the boys and girls who have worked at the Festival in recent weeks, and invited them to also experience it as an opportunity to be together: «Politics must recover the pleasure of being among people. We have difficult challenges ahead of us, but we also have a great desire to face them, without fear of choosing a side.”
