Political elections: and now when do we vote? From the hypothetical election day in spring, to the natural deadline in autumn

And now, when do we vote? This is the question that returns to the political table after the final green light from the Chamber to the new electoral law. The reform was approved today with 227 votes in favor and 164 against and will be applied to the next political elections. The legislature, in the absence of an early dissolution of the Chambers, has the autumn of 2027 as its natural horizon.

The date to keep in mind: April 14, 2027

But in the political calendar there is a date that, at this moment, takes on a particular meaning: 14 April 2027. It is not an electoral date already set, nor does it mean that we will go to the polls on that day. Rather, it is the day when many MPs elected for the first time in 2022 will reach the minimum requirement to accrue their parliamentary pension. The bill is linked to the four years, six months and one day of mandate and the installation of the current Chambers, which took place on 13 October 2022.
And it is precisely here that electoral law, the duration of the legislature and the future of Parliament intersect. If the Chambers were dissolved before reaching the requirement, some of the parliamentarians in their first term would risk not becoming entitled to a pension. If, however, the legislature reached beyond that threshold, the problem would be overcome.
Hence the real question: after the approval of the new electoral law, will the vote be brought forward or will it reach the natural deadline?
One thing is certain at the moment: April 14 is not the election date, but it is a very politically weighty date on the legislature’s calendar. From the next day it is plausible that anything could happen. And many parliamentarians and insiders are already talking about elections in the spring (to be understood if on a maxi election day with the administrative elections)

The calendar

– 8 October 2026: final approval of the new electoral law in the Chamber. euronews
– 14 April 2027: maturation of the pension requirement for many first-term parliamentarians.
– Autumn 2027: natural expiry of the legislature, unless early dissolution.
– Early elections: possible before the natural deadline, but the date is not set today.
