Catanzaro is preparing to become the capital of Italian youth basketball. From 31 October to 2 November the Calabrian capital will host the XVIII edition of the Mediterranean Trophy, a prestigious national event organized by FIP Calabria and sponsored by the Calabria Region and the Municipality of Catanzaro. An event that has become a point of reference over the years for the valorization of young basketball talents. Eight regional representatives, male and female, made up of athletes from the 2012 year, will compete in three days of great basketball. In the men’s tournament Calabria, Piedmont, Sicily and Lazio will be protagonists, while in the women’s tournament Calabria, Sicily, Piedmont and Tuscany will compete. an event that embraces different Italian basketball traditions and which, in previous editions, saw the participation of young people who subsequently landed in Serie A and the various national teams.
The technical value of the event, included in the FIP’s national Academy project, is particularly significant. The managers of the Italian youth men’s and women’s teams will be present in Catanzaro, who will closely follow the young talents. Meetings and moments of discussion between technicians and coaches are also planned, to strengthen the connection between local activities and national training courses. Special guest will be Roberto Brunamonti, legend of Italian basketball, European champion with the national team in 1983, Olympic silver medalist in Moscow 1980 and four-time Italian champion with Virtus Bologna. A prestigious presence and an example for the new generations.
