«A historic day for Catanzaro». With these words, the president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, the regional councilor for the Environment, Antonio Montuoro and the mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, president of Arrical, defined the scope of the interventions for the Catanzaro water scheme presented today in a press conference.
On a technical level, the interventions for Catanzaro are part of an overall strategic project of over 35 million, intended – this is the general objective – to resolve once and for all what has often been an emergency for the capital, the water emergency. The plan concerns the entire «Simeri-Passante» water scheme, which supplies the city of Catanzaro starting from Lago Passante to the Santa Domenica drinking water plant, passing through the Magisano basin. This is a strategic plan intended to renovate an aging infrastructure, dating back to the 60s and 70s of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno era. In detail, approximately 19.5 million euros are intended for the reconstruction and restructuring of the networks, while 6 million euros will be used for the strengthening and adaptation of the Santa Domenica water purification plant to current treatment standards.
Furthermore, the new Torrazzo reservoir serving Catanzaro Lido is nearing completion: a project worth around 5 million which will come into operation by the end of the year to overcome the historic summer water shortages due to the influx of tourists. From a management point of view, Sorical – which already deals with the large-scale supply – will take over the management of the city’s Integrated Water Service in the coming months. As regards the timing, after the soon start-up of the tank, the other interventions will follow a four-year process between design, procurement and construction sites. In addition to Occhiuto, Montuoro and Fiorita, the press conference was also attended by the CEO of the regional Department of the Environment, Salvatore Siviglia, the CEO of Sorical Maurizio Nicolai and the CEO of Sorical, Giovanni Marati.
Occhiuto, change of pace in the water sector
«We have done a complicated job over the years and today we can finally see the fruits». The president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, said this, speaking at the press conference for the presentation of the intervention plan for the water scheme of the city of Catanzaro. «It is a historic page for the city of Catanzaro, an important commitment for which – explained Occhiuto – I want to thank councilor Montuoro who has worked on it with great commitment over the last year. However, it took many years of work to achieve it: I remember that at the beginning of my first legislature there was no Arrical, but the consortium of municipalities that was supposed to plan the interventions was effectively dead, and there was no Sorical, which was in liquidation. We had no possibility either to plan or to spend resources. We have done a complicated job over the years and today we can finally see the fruits.”
«It was one of those jobs that politics often doesn’t do because it doesn’t give an immediate result, but we – continued the president of the Calabria Region – did it but we are happy to have changed the pace of this region also on water infrastructures». According to Occhiuto «in past years there has not been a problem with the quantity of resources, but the problem was that no one had put a hand to the two bodies authorized to plan and carry out the interventions. We did it and now we are spending the resources of the FSC and Por to bring back, or rather to give, water to the Calabrians, even to those who have never had it in their homes until now, and it is an uncivilized fact in a region that must be considered civilized”.
