Over 10,000 signatures have been collected in Calabria, more than double those needed, deposited this morning in the Regional Council for the regional law proposal on “assisted suicide” promoted by the Luca Coscioni Association and already approved in Veneto, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Sardinia and Umbria.

Present were the treasurer of the association, Marco Cappato, the representatives of the Liberi Subito Committee and the volunteers who participated in the campaign to collect signatures in 53 Calabrian municipalities with 12 signatory mayors. «The ruling of the Constitutional Court, which established the right to medical assistance in voluntary death under certain conditions, is over seven years ago – says Cappato – This right therefore exists throughout Italy. The problem is that in seven years only 19 people have obtained help to die. In southern Italy zero. Demonstrating that the law has not yet been implemented in the South. With the popular initiative law proposal we ask for certain procedures and deadlines. Because if the right is a right it cannot be boycotted.” In front of Palazzo Campanella with Marco Cappato, among others, also the regional councilor of the Democratic Party, Giuseppe Falcomatà; the former regional councilor Giuseppe Giordano; the mayor of Jonadi (VV), Fabio Signoretta; the councilor of the Municipality of Morano Calabro Josephine Cacciaguerra. «I hope – added Cappato – that we want to open an open discussion on the basic text that we are depositing here in Calabria. The text may be modified, but let it not be said that it is not a matter of regional competence. The Constitutional Court has reiterated, with various sentences, that healthcare organization is a regional competence and therefore healthcare organization at the end of life is also a regional competence”.
