Ct Vela Messina beats Tennis Comunali Vicenza 5 to 1 and regains the place of honor in group 2 of the men’s team tennis championship, with only one round left until the end of the regular season.
The match against the Venetians was, in fact, a sort of play-off for winning second place which, let’s remember, allows whoever gets it to get their hands on salvation while avoiding the unpleasant queue of the playouts. And the team led by captain Francesco Caputo (vice Antonio Famà) closed the practice after the four singles. It was Dragos Nicolae Madaras who brought the first point to the hosts who, down 2-0 at the start, recovered the break deficit against Giovanni Peruffo and then won easily 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and a half of play. Giorgio Tabacco, after giving up the first set at the tie break to Gabriele Bosio, gave the player from Vicenza a double 6-1, bringing the score to 2-0. Juan Bautista Otegui also performed well, beating Alessandro Battiston in two sets (7-5, 6-3 the score). Finally, Fausto Tabacco completed the job by beating the Frenchman Bertand 6-3, 7-6. The challenge between the two, respectively number 455 and 409 in the world (the Frenchman boasts a best ranking of 260), was interesting, with Tabacco who, after winning the first set 6-3, was able to recover a break deficit in the second, going from 2-5 to 5 all. At the tie break, the home tennis player made no mistakes and got the point that closed the match. The doubles saw one success on each side for the final 5 to 1.
The next round will be decisive in the fight for second place. The club chaired by Tato Spatari, in fact, by beating bottom team Crema will have the certainty of competing in the A1 championship again next year.
