Francesco Battaglia, 44 years old, died in Melito Porto Salvo, in Reggino, following an excavator overturning. According to what we learned, the victim was carrying out work on his property when, for reasons still under investigation, the excavator he was driving overturned, crushing him. Despite the timely help provided, the man died from the very serious injuries he sustained. The investigations, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Reggio Calabria, are carried out by the Carabinieri of Melito Porto Salvo.

Battaglia had only started operating a few minutes ago when, for reasons still being investigated, the vehicle overturned, overwhelming him. Probably the ground on which he was moving to carry out the interventions gave way, causing the mechanical vehicle to falter which then fell on one side. It all happened in the space of a few seconds, leaving Battaglia who didn’t even have the chance to make an attempt to reach safety. A short distance away were his partner with her son and his mother. With their eyes wide open in terror, they witnessed the scene, immediately running to the rescue of their relative, and then raising the alarm. An ambulance from the 118 service, the firefighters from the Lembo detachment and the Carabinieri from the local company arrived on site.

«A dramatic fatality profoundly shook our community on the morning of All Saints’ Day. The municipal administration and the entire citizenry – commented the mayor, Tito Nastasi – rally with emotion and immense pain around the Battaglia family for this sudden and shocking loss. The most heartfelt and profound condolences from the entire Melitese community go to the family and friends of the young man who tragically passed away.”
