The robbery carried out yesterday afternoon in a supermarket in via Taormina was not successful. The perpetrator was a lone robber who showed up in the supermarket located in front of the 24th Peloritani Land Artillery Regiment. Under the threat of a knife he forced the employees to hand over money from a cash register.
It seemed like a successful coup but in those tense minutes someone managed to raise the alarm promptly, causing the police to intervene.
In the meantime, the criminal had fled but immediately afterwards the police intercepted a man considered to be the perpetrator of the attack who was taken to the barracks for investigation. The extent of the loot, which is currently being quantified, is not yet known. For the people who were present at the time of the robbery there were moments of real panic.
To trace the perpetrator of the robbery, the images from the supermarket’s video surveillance cameras were invaluable and were immediately viewed by the investigators. The videos allowed the police to immediately track down the robber and managed to stop him shortly afterwards.
Last July, not far away, in via Bonino, another supermarket was targeted. On that occasion there were two people who broke in and threatened an employee who was at the checkout armed with a box cutter. They had the proceeds delivered to them. On that occasion the loot was around 500 euros. The investigations launched by the Carabinieri and the police allowed, within a few days, to identify and arrest two men.
