Cataract removal surgery was successfully performed on a 103-year-old patient at the Grand Metropolitan Hospital of Reggio Calabria. The lady had been suffering from a very advanced cataract for some time which caused her to have serious visual impairment. He therefore chose to undergo the operation to return to seeing the light, the colors and, above all, the faces of his loved ones, “like in the past”.

The operation was performed by Simone Antonio Ambrogio, medical director of the Ophthalmology Unit, directed by Livio Giulio Marco Franco, assisted by the instrumentalists Giuseppina Liuzzo and Domenico Sorrenti. At the end of the speech Ambrogio explained how today “age is no longer a limit for eye surgery. Thanks to the minimally invasive techniques of modern surgery, with surgical incisions of just a few millimetres, the use of ultrasound and local anaesthesia, the operation takes a very short time, is almost painless, and guarantees very high safety even on centenarian patients.” “The procedure – a hospital note explains – was perfectly successful, it was performed on an outpatient basis, the patient returned home immediately after the operation and the post-operative progress was very rapid”.
