An important contribution arrives from the Sicilian Region for the safety of the purification plant of Giardini Naxos, Taormina and Castelmola, located at the mouth of the Alcantara river.
The regional Department of Civil Protection has in fact signed the financing decree which assigns 2,600,000 euros to the Sewerage Network Consortium for a restoration and strengthening intervention, with temporary works, of a section of the left bank of the river, damaged by the bad weather that hit the Ionian area between January and February 2025.
The funds come from the Pr Fesr Sicilia 2021-2027 which, with the Action 2.10.1-Restore “Interventions for reconstruction in response to natural disasters”, made 45 million euros available and the Region received 181 applications for 95.5 million euros, of which 79 eligible with financial coverage, 30 eligible but not financeable at the moment due to lack of coverage, while 72 are were excluded due to lack of the requirements set by the measure.
The request for funding sent by the Consortium, chaired by Alfredo Elia Mandri, had placed second in the ranking and now the provision for assigning the sums has arrived, signed by the general manager of the regional Civil Protection Department, Salvo Cocina, following the signing of the specifications that regulate the operation.
