Algieri’s appeal (Unioncamere): «Now Calabria transforms the tourism boom into stable development»

Calabria continues to surprise especially when it manages to tell its story through numbers. For decades the narrative has favored glorifying its fragilities: unfinished infrastructures, depopulation of internal areas, youth emigration, economic gaps. Today, however, a different story emerges which, by hiding the critical issues, returns the image of a land that has finally learned to transform its natural and cultural heritage into a competitive factor.
The data from the Ministry of the Interior, processed by the system Hosted Webhave highlighted this paradigm shift with Calabria in first place in Italy for growth in tourist arrivals in the first half of 2026. The 10.54% increase compared to the same period of the previous year represents the best national result, while the 23.19% jump in foreign visitors describes a region finally chosen as a tourist destination after having conquered those international markets which, until a few years ago, were marginal and irrelevant on the economic balance. And what is most appreciated is that, while in the same period, Italy grows by 4.5%, Calabria runs at more than double the speed.
Behind this acceleration there is not only the call of the coasts and the cobalt blue sea. Historic villages, experiential tourism, food and wine, religious routes, natural parks and an offer that is slowly learning to distribute flows beyond the summer months contribute to driving demand. It is the sign of an economy that is trying to free itself from the historical dependence on seasonality.
«The data for the first half of 2026 undoubtedly represent a very encouraging sign for Calabria. Recording a growth in arrivals of more than 10% and, above all, an increase of more than 23% in foreign visitors means that our region is becoming increasingly attractive on national and international markets”, explains Klaus Algieri, president of the Cosenza Chamber of Commerce, national vice-president of Unioncamere and regional president of Confcommercio.
