An alleged corporate dinner organized by the Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Crotone, at a well-known restaurant in the city, has raised a wave of criticism and concerns about Calabrian healthcare priorities. The event, aimed at discussing the new business plan with managers and doctors, would have been duly approved and authorized with a cost of approximately 6,000 euros.
The fact, made known through a press release from the Regional Secretariat of the Italian Left, has sparked a debate on the use of public resources, considering the serious health emergencies affecting the area. In particular, it is underlined that the Crotone area and its province is affected by a 50% increase in oncological mortality, with an alarming increase in deaths among children and young people.
Calabrian healthcare: priorities under accusation
The criticism is not limited to the company dinner. In the statement, Francesco Tallarico And Giovanni Marsala highlight other worrying aspects of the regional health system, defining it as “collapsing”. An emblematic example concerns patients suffering from systemic sclerosis, forced to use a generic drug which, according to the Italian Systemic Sclerosis League, would worsen their health conditions due to side effects. The cost difference between the generic and the original is only 3.05 euros, a saving considered negligible compared to the potential impact on patients’ health.
Political management at the center of the controversy
A further element of criticism is aimed at the President of the Calabria Region, who is also Commissioner for Health. The Secretariat of the Italian Left denounces a management deemed inefficient and unfair, underlining how the president was timely in organizing a surgical operation at the University Hospital of Catanzaro for himself, but slow in providing adequate responses to the health needs of Calabrian citizens.
“The right to health is compromised”
Tallarico and Marsala denounce that delays and questionable choices in regional health management seriously compromise citizens’ right to health. The statement expresses the certainty that the Calabrians will take note of the damage caused by the current political representatives, definitively rejecting them at the polls.
The difficulties
The story once again highlights the structural difficulties of Calabrian healthcare and the perception of management distant from the needs of citizens. While the alleged dinner of the ASP of Crotone has put the spotlight on an expense that some consider inappropriate, there remains in the background a broader picture of unresolved health emergencies, which require urgent and concrete interventions.
