False start for Red Moon in the preliminary regattas of the America’s Cupstarted today on the waters of Barcelona. The Italian boat, challenging the reigning champions Emirates Team New Zealand, made a small mistake on the first of the six legs of the race while slightly behind the Kiwis, after a start that was practically even. The Italians, after a tack, ended up with the bow under water and lost control of the boat, which was sailing well, coming off the foils and remaining virtually stationary on the sea. Luna Russa, right behind, was unable to get up for about 20 seconds due to an electrical problem.
Given the large gap accumulated by New Zealand and in view of the next race, taking place this afternoon, Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni have opted to retire. It was the second race today: in the first Alinghi easily defeated the French of Orient Express. Soon the third race, between NYYC American Magic and Ineos Britannia; finally the challenge Luna Rossa-Orient Express.
