The school ship of the Italian Navy, Amerigo Vespucci, stops in Crotone today as part of the “Vespucci Mediterranean Tour”, but it will do so in an atmosphere of deep condolences. As a sign of mourning for the disappearance of the Holy Father, the ship’s flag is hoisted at half auction and the traditional welcome ceremony will not be held.
The captain of Vascello Giuseppe Lai, commander of the ship, will welcome local civil and military authorities on board, including the president of the Calabria Region Roberto Occhiuto and the mayor of Crotone Vincenzo Voce. The visits booked by the public are confirmed, but all visitors are invited to maximum sobriety and composure. Crotone of Crotone represents the eighth stage of the Mediterranean tour, conceived by the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto to tell Italy through his cultural, scientific and technological excellence, after 20 months of world tour. To facilitate access, a free shuttle service will be active from the Ezio Scida stadium to the port area from 11:00 to 24:00.
