After the attack on a penitentiary police officer on duty at the Castrovillari prison at the hands of an inmate – the inspector was apparently hit with a fragment of glass, sustaining a wound to the face -, the regional councilor Ferdinando Laghi he went to the prison and met with the director to express the utmost solidarity with the inspector and the entire Penitentiary Police force.

In the conversation with Carrà the serious critical issues that Castrovillari, like other penitentiary institutions in Italy, experiences on a daily basis, first of all the lack of staff. What is worrying, in fact, is the impossibility of guaranteeing a turnover even for retiring staff, a condition that places the entire system in serious organizational difficulties. But there is also the problem linked to the management of particular cases of prisoners, such as psychiatric prisoners who would need to be accommodated in dedicated facilities.

“A complex situation – declared Councilor Laghi at the end of the visit – which – although it is under control in Castrovillari – must also deal with these extreme difficulties. From the lack of staff to structural criticalities, the Castrovillarese reality strives to guarantee a dignified daily life for officers and prisoners and, also for this reason, it deserves greater attention and more and better interventions”.
