«We ask that the choice to leave be reconsidered, we ask the government and the President of the Region to have a proactive attitude and not to pass the buck. I ask that that investment remain in Calabria, because it is an opportunity for work, development, possibilities and attractiveness for our region. We cannot make Calabria a closed region that does not want to innovate and does not want to create new work centers. So we and the entire world of associations and trade unions all agree that that investment must remain there.” The regional secretary of the Calabria Democratic Party said it, Nicola Irtoin Mormanno (Cosenza) for the «General States of the Mountains and Internal Areas», with reference to the decision of the multinational Baker Hughes to renounce a 60 million industrial investment in the port of Corigliano Rossano.
«The Region – added Irto – must summon the multinational together with the Government and explain that Calabria wants to be and must be on that plant. The government cannot limit itself to a note from Minister Urso while the President of the Region, who every day explains to us that he has superpowers, has limited himself to passing the buck on others on this matter. I haven’t spoken to Mayor Stasi, but I realize that we cannot think of dumping the problem on the Municipality or on a simple statement from an administrator. Rather than passing the buck, the Region should say ‘let’s all get around the table and decide whether this investment should be made in Calabria yes or no’. From what I read it seems to me – concluded the regional secretary of the Calabria Democratic Party – that everyone’s answer is yes. So if there is the will, the solution can be found and we avoid getting things right because up to now I have only seen a get-it-done attitude on the part of the institutions.”
