Yesterday morning, in the headquarters of the General Directorate of the ASP of Messina, a meeting was held to outline the present and future of Barcelona’s healthcare and resolve the welfare issues of the Cutroni Zodda facility.
The new mayor Melangela Scolaro and the health care expert Paolo Calabrò sat around the table, in a climate of constructive discussion. Representing the top management of the provincial health authority were the general director Giuseppe Cuccì, the health director Giuseppe Ranieri Trimarchi and the administrative director Giancarlo Niutta, flanked by Massimo Bruno, district head of Barcelona, by Carmelo Crisicelli, head of the complex operational unit of basic and specialist medicine, by Nino Genovese, acting health director of the garrison, and by Francesco Lo Giudice for the emergency room.
Absolute priority was given to the operation of the emergency room. The declared strategic objective consists in proceeding with the progressive reinternalization of the medical and nursing staff, a conditio sine qua non for stabilizing the emergency response in the district over time. In terms of beds, compared to the current allocation of 24 units (divided equally between medicine, surgery and infectious diseases), the corporate governance has announced an imminent expansion: 2 additional places are coming in medicine, 8 in pneumology and 4 dedicated to rehabilitation. Furthermore, Director Cuccì’s full availability to the request made by Mayor Scolaro for an enhancement of oncology, a fundamental measure to limit patient travel, was also met. A substantial convergence emerged on the need to characterize the two adjacent structures in a complementary way: the Fogliani in Milazzo focused on the management of emergencies and urgencies, the Cutroni Zodda intended as a center for chronic care, long-term care and rehabilitation. An extensive examination concerned the community hospital, a 20-bed facility.
