The Carabinieri of Belvedere Spinello carried out a preventive seizure of the two municipal purification plants, following the order of the investigating judge of the Court of Crotone, following an investigation coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The operation is the result of complex investigations conducted by the military personnel, with the technical support of Arpacal of Crotone, who ascertained the leakage of untreated urban waste water from the non-functioning purifiers. The contaminated water would have flowed into the Neto river, causing smelly spills and potential risks to public health.

The checks began after the complaint presented in March 2025 by some residents of the area, accompanied by laboratory analyses. The subsequent inspections and samplings near the purifiers, located in the locality Chiusa del Pozzo e Chiaretta, confirmed that the wastewater, containing paper and fecal material, was dispersed in the surrounding land – an area classified as a Special Protection Area – until it flowed into the river. Bacteriological analyzes also revealed the presence of escherichia coli ed intestinal enterococci, confirming environmental pollution and the risk for humans and animals.

According to what has emerged, the investigation – still in the preliminary phase – assumes that some representatives and employees of the Municipality of Belvedere Spinello are criminally liable for failure to comply with the bans on dumping into soil and water (art. 137 of Legislative Decree 152/2006), throwing dangerous things (art. 674 of the criminal code) and damage (art. 635, paragraph 2 of the criminal code).
