Calabria continues its troubled economic transition within a landscape of light and shadow. A horizon that reflects an increasingly dynamic, but also very fragile, entrepreneurial reality. In a context marked by the perfect storm that shakes the pillars of the global economy (among the winds of war, the surge in energy prices, the increase in fuel and the crisis of raw materials) the business panorama in Calabria, in recent years, has shown an extraordinary ability to adapt. But today, more than ever, that same resilience is faltering under the weight of exogenous events that threaten to overwhelm the entire regional production fabric. The signs of deep erosion are, unfortunately, evident.
The scenario
The Calabrian economy runs on the ridge defined by the latest Unioncamere-Movimprese findings on the first three months of 2026, between stumbling blocks and clearings. With light and dark numbers. The report reconstructs the production perimeter which appears smaller than a year ago with a negative variation in the stock of economic realities registered in Calabria which fell from 182,798 on 31 March 2025 to the current 180,608 recorded on 31 March this year. Negative variation also in the granary of active companies which reduced from 157,242 a year ago to the current 155,168. From January to March, therefore, the regional system continued to move on a battlefield corroded by difficulties that bear the signs of the erosion that occurred after the pandemic fracture.
