Human currents blow violently into a Calabria that continues to crack in the midst of social cracks. The resilience of families is on the edge of the crisis. Every day that passes grows the number of people in the chopped chopped that no longer return. And the use of banks is becoming a collective phenomenon. At least according to Mister Credit of Crif, the control unit risks of banking, In 2024 47.7% of the Calabrians contracted a debt with banks. These are personal loans that have increased in the amount and installments to be returned. The feeling of feeling poorer is folding the effort of tired men and not quite firm in the faith of being able to cope with the most elementary needs. On the fire of need they blow the winds of the inflation and the increases of the energy products that affect the heart of domestic finances. Since the last Rapporo of Bankitalia, the banks operating in Calabria, interviewed between August and September as part of the survey on the progress of the demand and the offer of credit at a territorial level (Regional Bank Lending Survey, RBLS), have reported one for the first half of 2024 one slight resumption of the demand for loans by companiesafter the strong decline in the three previous semester. Instead, it increases that of families, especially in the component with consumption purposes. Therefore, there is no longer only the debt to finance the purchase or renovation of the house (form of finning which, even after the marked contraction recorded in 2023, has returned to grow slightly, says Bankitalia), but the personal loan or aimed for current expenses, for the new or used car, for furniture, visits and health care or dental, for the studies of the children or, simply, renew the family wardrobe.
Territorial requests
According to the data of the Eurosic information system, the average debt with banks, in Calabria, amounts to 22,081 euros and generates an average installment of 232 euros per month. This is the lowest monthly amount in Italy but it is inevitable because here are also the lowest income in the country, according to what has defined a recent study by the Cgia di Mestre. Therefore, one out of two Calabrian tested with banks and only 13.3% do it for a mortgage. 32.8% are aimed at banks for a personal loan (the most requested one is from 5 thousand euros to be extinguished in three years) while most of the Calabrians (53.9%) are embarrassing for a finalized loan. At the provincial level, in Cosenza the population with active credits descends to 45.2%, the amount and installments required, however, rise, respectively at 23,819 euros and 236 euros. In Catanzaro, however, almost half of the population (49.4%) has an active credit with an average loan of 24,233 euros which is returned with monthly installments of 243 euros. In Reggio the average debt is lower: “only” 19,498 euros that 50.2% of the population returns with installments of 223 euros. In Vibo the average loan is 21,675 and the indebted population, which pays monthly installments of 237 euros, is equal to 42.8%. Entertainment of the medium -sized debt practically equivalent to Crotone where 50.6% of the population has an active credit of 21,191 euros which extinguishes with installments of 222 euros. The average age of those who access a loan is that between 25 and 54 years old. In recent times, the formula of purchasing in installments of zero interests has grown. And this, however, represents a form of debt which, in the long run, ends up weighing on family budgets.
The Fabi alarm
In the past months, the Fabi banking union had reported the worrying increase in the phenomenon of insolvency that is also spreading in every corner of Calabria. The inability to cope with debts with credit institutions is conditioned by the money that enters our home and no longer seem to be enough to eat. And this is how you end up postponing the installments of mortgages and funding to be destined to be allocated, together with those of the bills of water, light and gas. Factors that “reduce the available income and put banks customers in difficulty who cannot honor the installments of the funding received”. Bankitalia, in his report on the economy in Calabria, noticed a worrying increase. “With reference to the complex of regional customers, the share of deteriorated credits on the total bank funding, gross of value adjustments, increased from 5.5 percent of the end of 2023 to 6.9 at the end of June, interrupting a drop that continued since 2016. The increase concerned the not suffering positions, which represent about two thirds of the total debrious credits”.
