A heavy vehicle used for transporting cars (five of which were being transported) caught fire in the Calavà tunnel of the Messina Palermo while travelling along the stretch between Patti and Brolo. The Fire Department arrived on site promptly and it was necessary to close the carriageway in the direction of Palermo to allow for the extinguishing operations. The vehicles coming from Messina were therefore made to exit at Patti and continue on the SS113. At Brolo, however, the vehicles coming from the opposite direction were allowed to exit. The tunnel will have to remain closed for some time for restoration and safety. Only late in the evening was the mandatory exit at Patti, in the direction of Palermo, removed and two-way traffic was established on the mountain side carriageway in the Patti / Brolo section, from km 70+800 to km 75+300.
