The diocesan office for social problems and work intervenes in the Cargill affair, the company in the Giammoro industrial area which risks closure, leaving around fifty families without jobs.
The worry
«The drama experienced by Cargill workers – states Don Sergio Siracusano, director of the diocesan office – cannot leave the Church indifferent, which has always been attentive to the dignity of the human person». The company, considered for years a production point of reference for the area, continues to operate despite the sudden decision of the American governance to cease operations. A choice deemed incomprehensible and “not respectful of people”, because it lacks dialogue and perspectives for employees.
The appeal to the institutions
The Diocese calls the attention of the local authorities to avoid “speculation to the detriment of families and workers” and to restore a horizon of serenity to employees. The message underlines how, according to the Social Doctrine of the Church, “the first capital to be safeguarded and valorised is man, the person, in his integrity”.
The Church of Messina thus renews its solidarity and closeness not only to Cargill workers, but to all those experiencing employment crisis situations in the territory of the Archdiocese.
