Degradation and neglect in a place where harmony, decorum and cleanliness should reign. The complaint concerns an area of the Corigliano cemetery and comes from a citizen who, like many in recent days, went to visit his deceased loved ones before the holiday dedicated to their memory to avoid the crowds and confusion and thus be able to pay homage in peace. Well, precisely in this silent journey towards the tomb of his deceased, the citizen in question, accompanied by his nephew, came across the state of decay in which the church of the Purgatory of San Giuseppe finds itself. The place, apparently, is not the responsibility of the municipal administration, and is in a state of total abandonment and more.
In addition to the bad smell that can be felt in the area, including accumulations of rubbish, rubble piled up near the entrance door and dried flowers scattered everywhere, inside the situation is even worse. Beyond the niches that have deteriorated over time, some of which are very ancient, there is also a situation that gives rise to a certain concern for the structural stability of the building, with the walls appearing damaged and a general lack of maintenance for some time now as the signs on the entire structure represent. In the citizen’s story/report there is also a passage that is also macabre, as one of the chests inside a burial niche is said to be open, since the marble wall has now collapsed and there are human remains that are even visible. An image that certainly disturbs and causes a certain dismay, also due to the respect for the memory of the deceased himself.
From what we have learned, the management of the Purgatorio San Giuseppe chapel belongs to one of the city’s congregations, but it is clear that for some time no one has taken care of the little church which has now been left in total abandonment.
Added to this is the fact that the municipal employees responsible for the cemetery service have said that they are not competent on the structure in question and between one rebound of responsibility and another, certainly, what remains is a situation of degradation which should be remedied as soon as possible. In this sense, urgent intervention is requested from the municipal administration to verify the real structural and hygienic-sanitary conditions of the church, and also the management responsibilities, so as to be able to intervene to restore the places and restore dignity to a sacred place and to the graves of the deceased inside.
An intervention that would restore dignity to the entire cemetery area. The complaint also comes just before the weekend where thousands will go to the cemetery to pray on the graves of their loved ones and the situation will be visible to the eyes of visitors. The hope is that as soon as possible we can reach a solution that restores decorum and dignity to the place which is currently the victim of neglect.
