Cargill dispute, the unions are pessimistic about the outcome of next Wednesday’s meeting and renew their request for intervention by the Ministry of Business through the opening of the crisis table in Rome. An initiative – they say – that must be done with a certain speed given that between now and the end of the year – they claim – 49 workers could find themselves fired and without any future.
«Cargill – say the general secretary of Uil, Ivan Tripodi, and Tindaro Marchese, secretary of Uiltec Messina – is taking on the responsibility of perpetrating an insult towards the workers, their families and the entire territory who are suffering this absurd decision which will lead to the dismissal of the workers. The convocation of the regional department for Productive Activities on November 5th in Palermo is certainly useful, but we are absolutely convinced of the need for a simultaneous involvement and intervention of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy as the dispute is taking on a dimension that requires the opening of a formal ministerial table. The first objective is to safeguard all workers, through the necessary social safety nets. At the same time – the trade unionists continue – we hope that potential buyers will come out into the open and become official in such a way as to definitively unmask Cargill which, as is known, has decided to close the production site, send 49 workers bankrupt and, at the same time, claims not to sell the plant in such a way as to eliminate any potential competitor. An absurd claim that highlights a backward corporate culture that has no social attention and no respect for people.”
