«The rejection by the Court of Auditors is not the real problem of the Strait Bridge. The real problem is that this great work, long awaited and much proclaimed, for almost 50 years, has effectively blocked the development and strategic investments of our metropolitan area, centralizing everything and everyone on this imposing but always very questionable work defined as the work of the century”.
Words and music by the metropolitan deputy mayor Carmelo Versace, who intervenes after the decision of the Court of Auditors not to grant legitimacy to CIPESS resolution no. 41/2025, relating to the financing of the Bridge project. «It is necessary to tell things as they are – states Versace –. It is not the Court that is blocking the future of the South, but a short-sighted policy that for years has concentrated resources on a symbolic work, taking them away from construction sites and interventions that are already ready, achievable and useful for our communities”. According to the deputy mayor, the funds intended for the Bridge were taken from the Fund for Development and Cohesion (FSC), i.e. from those resources that were supposed to finance crucial projects for Calabria and Sicily and which were supposed to serve to definitively shorten the infrastructural gap between North and South. «We are talking about around 1.6 billion euros, diverted towards the Bridge and taken away from priority infrastructures such as the Bovalino-Bagnara, the internal connecting roads such as the Pedemontana, State Road 106, High Speed and Capacity, the securing of coastal areas and the strengthening of local transport. All works already planned, all at a standstill because the expenditure chapter has been emptied.”
