The fire that practically destroyed the building is certainly of a malicious nature. part of the Petrosa pine forest was eaten awaygrazing the Viale Sergio Cosmai District Prison and the bunker courtroom. The fire highlighted all the flaws of a district marked by wounds inflicted by past administrators who were not perfectly enlightened, especially when they decided to create an open-air landfill there that was continuously attacked by fire. And it is precisely from that area that the hand of the arsonists would have moved on Saturday evening.
The arsonists probably intended to destroy the football field located in the areaabandoned with very expensive infrastructures (300 thousand euros) devastated by vandals, despised with the abandonment of asbestos cement and other waste that, perhaps, someone needed to clean up with fire.
It is also necessary to point out the complete lack of maintenance of the territory, therefore the need to try to create small fire-fighting systems that, in fact, would have prevented the destruction of one of the green lungs of the city and safeguarded all those species of birds and the fauna of the undergrowth that were forced to flee. About twenty hectares of land were devastated by the flames stopped before they could reach the protected area of the Pollino Park. The entire Petrosa area has, for over a year, been the basis of a regional initiative that, through the establishment of a nature reserve, would also like to safeguard it by starting the reclamation of two ecological bombs: the Petrosa landfill, which is located on one of the largest aquifers in Calabria, and the other landfill, the tire landfill that went up in smoke in the early 2000s. The burning tires were covered with soil by the shovels of the firefighters of the Provincial Command of Cosenza. The rubber, however, burned for some years with the release of numerous fumaroles. And it is for all these “difficult presences” that the arson attack on Saturday allows a new opportunity for verification, that is, the one necessary to review the future of a surface present near the Pollino Park in which many entrepreneurs operate who would like to continue living in the area without all these difficulties and emergencies.
