The traffic police makes the road sections public where the speed control tools are operational day by day. A way to invite motorists to moderate the pace respecting the limits and thus prevent road accidents. The services will be carried out from Monday 28 July until Sunday 03 August 2025, on the A18 Messina-Catania and A20 Messina-Palermo motorway sectionsin the sections most affected by a high rate of accidents, according to the following calendar:
• 28, 29, 30 July and 1 August 2025 on the A20 Messina – Palermo and A18 Messina – Catania, alternatively, in both senses.
The current limits:
• On the highways: 130 kilometers per hour, they drop to 110 in case of bad weather;
• On the main suburban roads: 110 kilometers per hour, they go down to 90 in case
of bad weather.
The sanctions in summary:
• Up to 10 km/h more than the limit – pecuniary sanction between 42 and 173
euro
• Over 10 km/he up to 40 km/h more – pecuniary sanction between 346 and
1388 euros and reduction of 3 points on the license;
• over 40 km/he no later than 60 km/h – pecuniary sanction between 543 and 2,170 euros,
reduction of 6 points on the license and accessory sanction of the suspension of the
driving license from one to three months
• Anyone exceeded over 60 km/hi maximum speed limits is punished with one
pecuniary sanction including 845 and 3,382, with the reduction of 10 points on the
license and the accessory sanction of the suspension of the license from six to twelve
months. In the event of a recidivism, the revocation of the driving license is arranged in a two -year period.
These sanctions have increased for novice drivers and professional drivers.
Particular attention will also be paid to the excesses of speeds committed by the drivers of commercial and transport vehicles (buses and heavy vehicles) also through the reading provided by the on -board systems such as tonoping and digital tachigraphs.
