The Italian authors’ associations want Gianni Amelio to be president of the Centro Sperimentale di cinematografia and ask for it with a letter sent to the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli. “After the sudden resignation from the role of president of the Experimental Cinematography Center of our colleague Sergio Castellitto, whom we thank for the work carried out – write Anac, 100 authors, Wgi and Aidac – we consider that the appointment of his successor can take place on the basis of a constructive dialogue between the institutions and the sector and first and foremost with the authors. The Experimental Center has always been a pillar for those who want to start doing this profession, as demonstrated by the quantity of successful professionals – many of them ours. associates – who were trained in that school. It is a place for transmitting knowledge and preserving the memory of cinema. For this reason we think we can contribute to the choice of a presidency that best supports the aspirations of the new generations of the sector and that it preserves and keeps alive the cinematographic heritage of which it is the custodian and invigorates it as much as possible in the city territory in an ever lively and popular dialogue and exchange. In this sense the authors’ associations Anac, 100 authors, Wgi and Aidac have consulted and unanimously agree in nominating Gianni Amelio for the presidency of the Experimental Cinematography Centre”.
Fiorita, mayor of Catanzaro: “The government gives a signal of meritocracy”
«Gianni Amelio is the personality who better than anyone else can play the role of president of the Experimental Cinematography Center. I fully endorse the appeal that the authors’ associations, which represent 1,300 Italian authors, have addressed to the Minister of Culture Giuli, supporting the candidacy of the director originally from San Pietro Magisano, one of the greatest cinema men in Europe”. The mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, stated this in a note. “The minister – adds Fiorita – exceeds the membership criterion and rewards the competence and talent of such a prestigious personality. Maestro Amelio studied in our ‘Galluppì high school before taking flight in the world of the big screen. He was also professor of the Experimental Center and therefore knows the National Film School and the National Film Archive perfectly. Without taking anything away from the other potential candidates, I believe that the Government, by appointing Amelio, would send an important signal in the direction of meritocracy”.
