The Metropolitan City formally handed over to the successful company the intervention works on three sections of the Pellaro coast to defend the coast and safeguard the infrastructure and homes of the area. The activity will allow the advancement of the shoreline through the reconstitution of the emerged beach and the submerged beach, strengthening the coastal defense action and allowing more immediate use of the beach.
“The works delivered today – commented the acting metropolitan mayor, Carmelo Versace – represent a concrete step in the Metropolitan City’s strategy to combat hydrogeological instability and protect our coastal heritage”.
«Even recently – he recalled – the metropolitan coastline has suffered very serious damage due to the increasingly frequent and intense waves of bad weather. Unfortunately, we all still have in mind the devastating effects of the passage of Cyclone Harry which put infrastructure, homes and economic activities at risk. We are therefore intervening not only to restore safety conditions, but to structurally strengthen the defense capacity of the coast.” “The maintenance of existing works, nourishment and the construction of new cliffs – explained the acting mayor – allow us to reconstitute the beach, protect the territory and restore full usability to stretches of beach particularly affected by atmospheric events”.
«The defense of the soil and the coastal strip – underlined Carmelo Versace – remain a priority of the Authority. For this reason, we continue to work with quality planning, investments and technical design in order to respond to the effects of hydrogeological instability and to guarantee greater safety for the communities of the district”.
«Finally, Carmelo Versace addresses applause and thanks to the director of the Territory and Environmental Protection Sector, Domenica Catalfamo, to the rup of this important intervention, the architect Giuseppe Bencivinni, and to the director of works Ezio Tripodi for «the brilliant work carried out and the important activity completed», as well as to the delegated metropolitan councilors Salvatore Fuda and Giuseppe Marino for «the constant commitment aimed at a particularly delicate sector and the assiduous presence in the territory».
