The Carabinieri of San Calogero, a town in the Vibonese area, have arrested two convicts for international cocaine trafficking. Angelo Mercuri, 57 years old, resident in Calimera (fraction of San Calogero), and Italo Iannello, 34 years old, from San Calogero, ended up in prison to serve final sentences of 10 years, 6 months and 10 years of imprisonment respectively. The two detention orders carried out by the Carabinieri were issued by the Criminal Enforcement Office of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Bologna after the decision of the Court of Cassation which rejected the appeal of the two convicted men and 8 other defendants at the end of the trial resulting from the DDA operation called “Due torri connection”, launched on 2 August 2011 against the organization of the cocaine broker Francesco Ventrici, also from San Calogero, who has been detained for some time and sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment. At the center of the investigation is the attempt to bring 1,500 kilos of cocaine from Ecuador to Italy (in Emilia Romagna and the Vibono area) and the importation of a thousand kilos of marijuana from Albania. In 2011, the investigations led to the arrest of 14 people in Italy, Austria and Spain. The organization would have operated from July 2010 to January 2011 with millions of euros also moved through a compliant credit institution in Slovenia.
