At the Tonnara di Bivona (VV) a meeting of strong political and associative value was held between a representation of the Calabrian Tyrrhenian navy and Coldiretti Pesca, confirming the centrality of the dialogue between operators in the sector and the representative organisation.
The meeting was attended by Daniela Borriello, national manager of Coldiretti Pesca, Antonino Mancuso, regional representative, Pietro Bozzo, director of Coldiretti, and the interprovincial vice-president (CZ-KR-VV) Giuseppe Porcelli.
Union success: the rectification of maritime coordinates
The discussion developed starting from a concrete result obtained thanks to the trade union and institutional action of Coldiretti: the Decree of the Ministry of Agriculture n. 0123684 of 13 March 2026, which finally corrects in a timely manner the coordinates contained in the previous Directorial Decree no. 9045689 of 6 August 2020.
An intervention that has been awaited for years, which remedies an incorrect perimeter which had produced distorting and penalizing effects for local fishing, leaving the area overlooking Amantea unprotected and, at the same time, removing from the navy a large portion of the seabed of the Gulf of Santa Eufemia, essential for the balance of activities and for the safety of work at sea. «This rectification – it was underlined – demonstrates that only an organised, competent and present representation in decision-making places can obtain concrete answers for fishermen», reiterating the role of Coldiretti Pesca as an authoritative interlocutor towards national and regional institutions.
The critical issues of the sector and economic sustainability
The discussion then addressed the numerous structural critical issues affecting the fishing sector: from the safety of port infrastructures, to the management of waste and disused gear, up to fairer access to tuna fishing quotas, which must also become a real opportunity for small-scale artisanal fishing vessels.
Particular attention was paid to the issue of the economic stability of companies, put at risk by the increase in production costs, starting with fuel, and to the need for public policies that accompany the sector in a truly sustainable transition, without passing the costs on to the operators.
Future prospects: direct sales and fishing tourism
During the meeting, the actions already in place and the future prospects promoted by Coldiretti were also illustrated: from the direct sale and valorisation of local fish, a fundamental tool for restoring profitability to fishermen’s work, to the organized disposal of gear, up to the request for an organic review of the regional legislation on fishing tourism, to make it consistent with the needs of businesses and coastal territories.
Towards a united and aware representation
What emerged forcefully, as underlined in the interventions of Pietro Bozzo and reiterated in the conclusions by the president Giuseppe Porcelli, was the need to further strengthen the relationship between the fishermen and the association, overcoming the isolation of individuals and building an increasingly united and aware representation.
Only through active and collective participation – it was highlighted – will it be possible to address not only daily urgencies and relations with institutions, but also the great strategic challenges that await Calabrian fishing: protection of resources, dignity of work, future of coastal communities.
