A full collaboration. Luigi Berlingieri, known as “ice face”, has for months been offering the anti-mafia judiciary of Catanzaro, led by Salvatore Curcio, information on the interests of nomadic crime in illicit affairs in the urban area and on the bloody events in which he was personally involved. Berlingieri was convicted with a final sentence for the massacre in Via Popilia, which took the lives of Benito Aldo Chiodo and Francesco Tucci on 9 November 2000. The repentant would have admitted his responsibility for the double murder, probably also explaining what happened in the subsequent phases. A week later, in fact, the entrepreneur Sergio Perri and his wife, Silvana De Marco, were murdered as soon as they left the construction site of the family business. On the same construction site, Franco Bevilacqua, understood as “Francu i Mafarda”, leader of nomadic crime until January 2001 and inspirer of the massacre, who subsequently threw himself into the arms of the State, he had the carcass of the car – a Lancia Thema – used by the commando in Via Popilia found.
But it was precisely Bevilacqua’s unexpected repentance, on which Berlingieri himself depended, that overturned the Cosenza gang of “gypsies”. To neutralize the significance of the boss’s declarations, it was decided to eliminate three of his associates: Gianfranco Iannuzzi, known as “a ‘ntacca”, Antonio Benincasa and Sestino Bevilacqua. All three were made to disappear within a few months. Iannuzzi’s remains were found in the Sybarite countryside thanks to the revelations of the Cassano collaborator Pasquale Perciaccante, while no trace of Benincasa and Bevilacqua was found. Franco Bruzzese, another prominent nomadic crime figure who later repented, spoke about their deaths. Berlingieri, an insider to the group, may have offered a further contribution to the reconstruction of the three cases of white wolffish. Cases which Celestino Abbruzzese, understood as “kitty”, another member of the gypsy clan who broke with the past and his family of origin, would also have reported.
