The route of the railway doubling is modified, meeting the needs of the territories involved along the Messina-Catania route, in particular Taormina. The green light came from the Schifani Council, with the decision to approve the technical variant which will allow the Sicilian Region to formulate a policy document to be sent to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of the Environment for approval. Once this step has been completed, the Italian railway network will be able to initiate “what has been agreed in terms of planning, authorization and implementation”, as underlined in the note from the Presidency of the Region. «We have listened to the requests of the territory – states the councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility Alessandro Aricò –, discussing with all the interested parties in order to find a solution that balances the need to modernize Sicily’s infrastructure without causing excessive inconvenience to those who live and work in those areas. A model of project sharing that could lead to the realization of the works in a more functional way to the needs of this part of the island”.
The idea of developing a variant to the original project arose following the meetings of the institutional table, promoted by governor Schifani together with the mayor of Taormina Cateno De Luca, the representatives of RFI and Italferr (the company in charge of designing the railway works), the extraordinary commissioner for the works, the regional Departments of Civil Protection and Infrastructure.
