Alongside the refinery, the province’s ecological transition path also sees A2a playing an important role in the future.
In fact, what emerged in the meeting, held in recent weeks at Sicindustria, regarding the essential role of the A2a power plant in San Filippo del Mela until 2027, reopens new perspectives starting from the “Forsu”, which will be able to implement and diversify the activity of the multi-utility . In short, there are margins for a consolidation of A2a’s presence in the area and above all there are the spaces and possibilities to avoid losing any jobs. And, in this sense, the unions are also waiting for the company to start building the projects that have been presented in recent months, and planned for the next few years, and in particular that on the OFMSW (organic fraction of solid urban waste) for the which A2a has already obtained all the authorizations and is in the process of drawing up the executive project. Furthermore, the Lombardy company has highlighted that approximately 270 million euros have been budgeted for all these plants. Planning and productivity, which can serve to keep all the people within the plant, because – the unions always say it – “we cannot afford to lose even a single job”
The 2023 data showed that A2a invested 54.3 million euros in Sicily, more than triple compared to the previous year, and generated an economic value in the area of 39 million euros. Added to the investments linked to the San Filippo del Mela plant are those in renewable energy. But the real turning point will come from the reconversion of the A2a Energiefuture power plant in San Filippo del Mela, through the installation of an electricity production plant with gas engines (environmental impact assessment process started in May 2024) and the installation of electrochemical battery storage systems. And this will lead to a decisive reduction in emissions, especially as regards sulphur.
