The Carabinieri of the Cardeto Station, with the support of the soldiers of the Carabinieri Station of Aversa (CE), executed a precautionary custody order under house arrest, issued by the Court of Reggio Calabria at the request of the local Public Prosecutor’s Office, against a man considered seriously suspected of the crime of fraud, tracked down and arrested in the aforementioned Campania locality.
The origin of the investigation: the scam of the “fake policeman”
The investigation started from an episode that took place in July 2024 in Cardeto, where an elderly woman was the victim of one of the most widespread scams: that of the so-called “fake carabiniere”.
The dynamics of the scam and emotional blackmail
According to what was reconstructed by the soldiers of the Carabinieri under the coordination of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Reggio Calabria, the victim had been contacted on her telephone number by an individual who, falsely qualifying himself as belonging to the Carabinieri, had informed her that her daughter was in custody for having caused a serious road accident. A phone call, during which the payment of a sum of money or the delivery of precious objects was urgently requested as the presumed consideration necessary to “resolve” the situation.
The delivery of the precious items and the escape of the criminals
The woman, overwhelmed by fear for her daughter’s fate, had collected the gold jewelery kept in the house and went to the meeting place, where two men, arriving in a car similar to those used by the police, had collected what had been delivered, and then quickly disappeared.
The investigations and identification of the person responsible
The subsequent report allowed the Carabinieri of Cardeto to start an investigative activity which made it possible to identify the car rented to commit the crime and, therefore, to the complete identification of the alleged perpetrator, who was subsequently traced to the Caserta area.

The result achieved confirms the constant attention of the Police Force towards the protection of the most vulnerable subjects.
