With a letter addressed to the secretaries of the parties and the representatives of the centre-left coalition, Paolo Todaro officially communicates the withdrawal of his willingness to run as a candidate for Mayor in the next local elections.
“I would like to sincerely thank all the citizens, militants and representatives of the political forces who have shown trust in my name in recent weeks. The support received has been a source of great pride and responsibility for me”, begins Todaro in the letter.
“My availability – he continues – came from the territory, was rooted in the territory and has always been the expression of a process of listening and sharing with those who experience the problems of our community on a daily basis. For this reason, I can state with serenity that it has never been, nor could it have been, a candidacy imposed from above”.
However, explains Todaro, “the debate of these last few days risks moving us away from the main objective: to restore a stable, competent and united government to the city. My availability arose exclusively from the desire to offer a uniting profile, capable of putting aside personalisms and divisions”.
“It is now evident – continues Todaro – that the political conditions to maintain my willingness to run as a candidate have no longer existed. Mine did not and does not want to be a divisive presence, and for this reason, consistently with the spirit of service that has guided me in recent months, I am withdrawing my willingness to run for Mayor of the city of Messina without the possibility of second thoughts”.
Paolo Todaro concludes with a hope: “I hope, indeed I am certain, that the center-left will quickly find the necessary unity to identify a shared candidacy that is up to the challenge that awaits us. For my part, I will continue to work for the good of our community, as a citizen even before a trade unionist, and I will support anyone who can authentically interpret the need for change of our fellow citizens”.
