“In 40 years I have never seen something like this.” This is how Marcello Scurria begins, alongside the group leader of his team in the city council Pippo Capurro, in a press conference that raises serious accusations against the mayor Federico Basile, whose resignation is being requested, and his council.
At the center are the two resolutions with which the council, last 20 July, instructed the lawyer Santi Delia to appear before the TAR in the electoral appeals pending. The only two resolutions out of the six total approved that day for which the mayor was absent.
“Even a child would understand that there is a conflict of interest, direct on the part of the mayor, indirect on the part of the councilors – says Scurria -. We make reports, then they will evaluate the prosecutor’s office of Messina and the prosecutor’s office of the Court of Auditors for any possible damage to the treasury”.
There would be a precedent, in this sense, concerning the Municipality of Ventimiglia di Sicilia. Scurria, who presented a question for immediate response, also highlights that if on the one hand Basile abstained during the council’s work, on the other he signed, nine days earlier, the legal power of attorney for the lawyer Delia.
“I have never seen a municipality appear in court for electoral appeals, everyone’s money is not spent to defend elected representatives. From a political and moral point of view I say that what has been done is immoral”, concludes Scurria.
