The sporting and social world of Messina is mourning the death of Giuseppe Carmignani, historic president of the Messina Sports Club, who passed away at the age of 89. A charismatic and cultured man, he has linked his name to memorable technical and organizational results, starting with the exhilarating rise of the men’s water polo team, culminating in promotion to Serie A1 in 2001.
In the 35 years of his presidency, he conceived and promoted numerous swimming, water polo and athletics events, including those of an international nature, but his greatest emotional impulse was for initiatives of social value, such as the Memorials dedicated to Vittorio Magazzù, among the founders of the Polisportiva Messina, Luca Locatelli, player of the Polisportiva Messina, who died prematurely in a road accident, to the unforgettable coach Carlo Scuderi and more recently the one entitled “I Nostri Angeli”, strongly desired by Carmignani to remember, in the best possible way, Francesco Filippo and Raniero Messina, the two “angels” torn by fate, in June 2018, from their dearest loved ones. Furthermore, his commitment to the city’s systems was invaluable, starting back in 1983 with the inauguration of the Fiumara Guardia swimming pool., the first real swimming facility built in Messina where it was possible to practice competitive swimming and the then emerging water polo. The funeral will be held on Thursday (4.00 pm) in the church of Pompeii.
