Third fire in three days in the Sibari railway yard. The mayor of Cassano allo Ionio, Gianpaolo Iacobini, intervened harshly on the matter, raising a profound reflection on the fate and progressive decline of the railway infrastructure, announcing an imminent confrontation with the leaders of the Italian Railway Network (RFI).
“No doubt: the matrix would be malicious”
The mayor entrusted a harsh analysis of the situation to social channels, emphasizing the need for a structural relaunch of the airport:
«The third fire in three days within the perimeter of the Sibari station not only signals a safety problem for railway traffic in a crucial hub. For the Fire Brigade, who intervened on site with teams from Rossano and Castrovillari, supported by the Falcons and the municipal Civil Protection, there is no doubt: the cause would be malicious. And for this reason in the next few hours a report will be sent to the judicial authorities against unknown persons.
The real problem, however serious, is perhaps not just the state of the area, which will be the subject, by the Municipality, of a specific ordinance to restore the decorum of the places.
No. The crucial point is to understand what future the Sibari station can and should have: the slow, progressive dismantling must be stopped, to rethink a new and different role, which helps to regain centrality, services and care, and therefore automatically also safety and decorum.
For this reason, in the next few days, I will request a meeting with RFI, to solicit urgent interventions but also the possibility of a discussion that can redefine certain perspectives and scenarios”.
