In recent days the mayor of Gioia Tauro, Simona Scarcella, and the municipal councilor responsible for Health, Giusy the Greathave sent to the attention of the doctor Lucy of Furygeneral director of the Provincial Health Authority of Reggio Calabria, a request for an urgent meeting regarding the need to “resolve the now unsustainable critical issues of the Gioia Tauro hospital”.
“Yesterday afternoon – the text of the letter – some citizens contacted the municipal administration to ask for help, in the grip of desperation and impotence that can sometimes arise in these situations. In this specific case, it happened that for a citizen, taken to the hospital in our city, given the conditions that could not be managed on site it was necessary to schedule an ambulance transfer to the Ospedali Riuniti of Reggio Calabria”.
Scarcella and Magno argue: «This data is already alarming considering that Gioia Tauro, a town with over 19,000 inhabitants and home to the largest port infrastructure in the Mediterranean, does not have an adequate hospital for any emergencies».
However, a further problem arose because at the Gioia Tauro hospital, despite the presence of an ambulance, there was no doctor.
